Our Campaign Aims
-
London suffers from traffic-related pollution. The sheer size of the city, along with a dense road network and the number of buildings, means that it tends to be one of the most polluted places in the UK.
Improving our air quality, especially around our schools and for our young people, is the first main aim of the campaign. -
Be it walking to school, cycling to work, or other everyday journeys you make to get from place to place – rather than solely for leisure or fitness – active travel can offer a convenient, accessible and affordable way to move more.
We want to encourage active travel by creating safe walking and cycling routes around the ladder for residents, visitors and commuters.
-
A community space is somewhere for local people to gather and connect, to do things together and pursue shared interests or activities; both serious and fun
We have an amazing multi-cultural community, from families to business owners, and we know that everyone will benefit from creating more spaces to meet and enjoy everything the ladder has to offer.
-
Through traffic means cars passing through an area whose destination is elsewhere.
Reducing this type of travel has lots of benefits such as improving the street environment for local communities, promoting a greater feeling of safety, and promoting cycling and walking.
Proposal Priorities
Our group agreed what we think the key priorities are for any Harringay Ladder reduced traffic scheme:
Traffic calming is insufficient to achieve the group’s goals so the removal of through traffic, which makes up the vast majority of traffic on the ladder, is required.
Access to businesses and places of worship, and all residences by car and emergency vehicles must be maintained - this proposal is not about removing vehicles wholesale in the area.
It is essential to ensure that the W5 bus route on Endymion Road is not interrupted.
We want to improve place-making in and around the ladder: capitalising on the local community's assets with the intention of creating public spaces that promote people's health, happiness, and well-being.
We want the number of trees, plants and community-focused landscaping to increase so that people can walk around and enjoy the look of the area.
Our Proposal
Over a number of months, and through lots of workshops, our group developed a proposal with an example of how traffic reduction could be achieved through the Ladder - this was submitted to the Council in July 2022.
The Council will use our proposal as well as initial feedback from other residents, businesses, and analysis from its traffic and transport partners, to develop a comprehensive traffic reduction scheme for Harringay Ladder (including Wightman Road and Green Lanes).
If you would to read the proposal we developed and submitted to the Council please find it here. You can also read the interim report the Council has prepared on the Harringay Ladder Traffic and Transport Review (HLTTR) here.
